  1. well the scroll that jade fox li mu bai probably knows the whole scroll. he got the real training from teh wudan master they talked about. so he got the hands on traiing and the scroll knowledge that would of course means hes more skilled than jade fox.

  2. this is strange but i read that during the civil war they already had means of reconaissance used hot air balloons for reconnaissance to help determine the location of troops and artillery. with such knowledge they could've maneuvered their forces coming in from a different vector but unless both sides know what the other side is up to than they shift and shift and shift... but even the powers to be by the civil war realized that line fighting was becoming way too costly in manpower. hence why after the civil war it was abandoned altogether.
