  1. companies had to offshore because the unions were making them uncompetitive and at teh same time the longshoreman union ha too much power no one group should have that much power to stop trade/commerce through the ports.

AI, automation, supply of labor outstripping demand of labor. low price imports. also regarding hte power of the longshoreman union etc. their situation is not the norm. their job can't be offshored but it can be automated which they're trying to fight but it's a losing battle because in the end the ports will be automated with or without their consent.
