  1. in the past men drowned out their sorrows with alcohol and c hain smoking. obviously drugs were available but for the common person they weren't that easy to get without some kind of connection to a member of organized crime. but since alcohol was mainstream no one questioned it much. so there have always been people looking for escapism outlets. its just now there are more options for it. which is not necessarily a good thing either.
