actually this is a rookie mistake. operation overlord only worked because the normandy beaches were lightly defended as the allies were able to lure away bulk of the german forces to anoher site so they could make their landings on normandy which was already bad enough with a lightly defended beach.
you have to look at operation downfall.
the allied top planners proposed the following force deployments to japan
42 aircraft carriers, 24 battleships, and 400 destroyers and destroyer escorts. Fourteen U.S. divisions and a "division-equivalent" (two regimental combat teams)[28] were scheduled to take part in the initial landings. Using Okinawa as a staging base, the objective would have been to seize the southern portion of Kyūshū.
Projected initial commitment
Operation Olympic[44] Coronet[45]
Personnel 705,556 1,171,646
Vehicles 136,812 222,514
Deadweight tons (shipping) 1,205,730[46] 1,741,023
Infantry divisions 11 20
Marine divisions 3 3
Armored divisions 0 2
Air groups 40 50[46]
basically long story short ... More than 6,000,000 total (projected)
japan is 10 x bigger... so your guesstimate of 600,000 is not bad.
