in more expensive COLA states like new york or california you would see more double income working couples in the 1980s.

something that no one talks about is that back in the 1980s the WW1/interwar generation were pretty much gone (as a generational cohort) they left a lot of houses on the market if they didn't pass it on to he next person by the 1970s. the WW2 generation were also dying off fast by the 1980s and they also dumped a lot of houses on the market if their kids didn't want it and remember this was when people moved way more than people do today so the kids typically didn't wan the houses and wanted to move elsewhere. to replicate this today the baby boomers would need to start dying off in droves now. but obviously no one wants to think of their parents kicking the bucket so fast. but that was how things were back in the days it was odd to see your parents live to be 90+ or outliving their kids but with baby boomers living so long they can potentially outlive millennials and gen x.
