  1. well when deng xiaoping said before them china was a loose heap of sand... well any country that had a major government turnover (qing empire) going through 20+ years of being carved up like a roast by every major european empire, and a world war with japan... that typically does that. it has been speculated that if japan didn't attack china during ww2 the KMT could've envtually brought china to its current level of development... just 20 years sooner. or if the qing empire basically just modernized faster the taiping rebellion could've been squashed, the revolution of 1911 might have been averted and instead of a hard revolt it could've been a soft transition. we'll never know for sure.
