What your missing is the big picture of why affirmative action with quotas came about. The ruling class had imposed segregation back when it had given up on reconstruction in the South after the civil war. The demands of the proletarian Black rights movement became not just equality from that point forward but a redress of past grievances including the social exclusion of Blacks for all kinds of better jobs and education. People like Hillary Clinton at the time opposed quotas when she opposed Republican Senator Edward Brooke at her graduation from Wellesley college. However both the end of segregation and affirmative action didn't mean the end of capitalism and now some Blacks see themselves as not needing the program to achieve their status and others remain committed seeing it as the only way to guarantee both their and the offsprings status just as the middle class Hillary Clinton originally feared quotas. The ruling class itself sees the need to have a certain Black middle class to keep the more rebellious elements under control.

@psycho.dad5252 Your boss knows that you will either quit or take his job which is why he isn't promoting you. Promoting people who can't do a job is a smart way to get rid of people who wouldn't ordinarily be fireable.

@tkps Harvard give preference to legacy admissions. The ruling class has always had an "Affirmative Action" and "Head Start" policy for their children. You don't think Bill Gates education was the same as an inner city school or even that of an average High School.
1
The biggest affirmative action admissions go to legacy applicants who make up 30% of Harvard admissions. The court ruling means nothing concerning them. Clarence Thomas has basically said the same thing as Joy that he was denied positions at prestigious law firms because they assumed he was an affirmative action student.

@kaizokujimbei143 Anyone who thinks this means that entrance to elite universities will now be based upon merit have been taken for a ride. All this does is prohibit the direct use of an applicant's race.
1
@timhallas4275 The ruling by the court would change nothing in this situation since Coca-Cola a company headquartered in Atlanta Georgia is a private company that can spend its profits as it sees fit. Just as it will change nothing for the 30% who are legacy admission to Harvard or any other university. Discrimination based upon tuition and housing costs will NOT change.

@timhallas4275 Obviously a "SMART" like you thinks it all about checking boxes. The biggest error most people who have never attended college make is to think the world is governed by what you know NOT who you know regardless of your ethnicity.

@ICBMCatcher Sowell lives in an upper middle class neighborhood isolated form the working class but not the liberals which are all his Bedford, CA neighbors. His theories are those of a bougoies simpleton on economics not much different than those of Adam Smith or Ricardo. For him everything is about free markets distributing scarce resources and government disturbing an ideal free market. For him class struggle plays no role as he sees bourgeois equality as the best of all worlds. .
1
Its unlikely that Sowell would have gotten a seat at Harvard had he not been discovered by Howard U. in his mid 20's after being to Korea in the US Army. Although not unheard of most of the Elite Universities do NOT take older students who are Army Veterans and only a limited number of transfer students.
1
@kyriss12 They have the same attitude as Hillary Clinton.
1
@oblivionsa7973 Sowell is characteristic of the "New Homeboy" attitude by conservative upper middle class Blacks who said that Jessie Jackson should have stopped marching with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and gone home. Ths was also a time in history that included a struggle against colonialism and Western Imperialism. China had driven out Western and Japanese Imperialist powers and Cuba had liberated itself from the yoke of American sugar interests, bankers and neo colonial domination.

@psycho.dad5252 So you got your promotion then, "What's the beef?" So your personal experience outweighs decades of evidence that blacks were denied access to better paying jobs based solely on color during segregation? Next you're going to be saying that once the civil rights act of 1965 was based America became color blind overnight? You realize that just wasn't true no matter how much conservatives argued otherwise. The middle class always attributes its success due to merit regardless of color anyway.
1
@seniorskateboarder5958 What were you doing? Acting out like the proud flamer you probably are? Or maybe your the type who has to announce he's gay to everyone.

@zaklex3165 Nothing guarantees a Doctor from Harvard is better than any other Doctor. What the decisions does is once again guarantee those with money can buy a legacy seat at the elite university of their choice like Harvard. .
1
@Cyberfender1 Now Donald Trump wants to bring it back by "Making America Great Again."
1
@gr5382 I think your full of it.

@marcisaacs9407 Sure his position is no doubt is that just like sliced bread free market capitalism solves all of man kinds problems.

@jb-vb8un A massive independent of the two parties movement By Black working people against Jim Crow racism broke done barriers of the bosses two party seperate but unequal government defended capitalist system. That fight changed the minds and attitudes of millions and the Civil Rights Act of 1965 was passed. This is when conservative Blacks like Thomas Sowell say Blscks should have went home and stopped fighting. Black workers well they had other ideas they kept fight for a redress of racial discrimination and access to jobs and educational opportunitoes previouslt denied them. They fought for and won a consent decree from the Steel bosses who had denied blacks access to the better paid work and won an afirmitve action consent decree that set targets and quotas for Blacks promotion into skilled trades and management. The first elected Black Senator, a Republican from Massachusetts, Ed Brooke spoke for quotas at Hillary Clinton's Wellesley colloge graduation where Hilary Clinton also spoke against quotas and bragged about her school parking lot education reform protest. Black Puerto Rican and Asian parents fought for community control of the schools in New York and desegregation of the schools in Boston and Louisville. All against the Democratic Party establishment. While Republican Goldwater a jew himself and denied access to the Country Club in his state voted against the 1965 civil rights act back when Hillary Clinton was calling herself a "Goldwater Girl."

@jb-vb8un I have Sowell's own words and his status as a Neo liberal who sits in the Milton Freedman chair at the Stanford University Hoover Institution. Sowell does not think capitalism involves exploitation. That Blacks should have stopped marching and protesting with the passage of the 1965 Civil Rights bill. Sowell loves to tell his version of the fair tale of capitalism where even acts like the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima and justified and supporting American Imperialist arrogance in Vietnam and condemning liberals for allowing the return of Elon Gonzalez to his father in Cuba.

@jb-vb8un The Japanese had been defeated by the time Truman & company ordered the atomic bombing of Japan. It was just another unjustified Imperialist massacre directed at civilians by the racist American ruling class. A ruling class that had set up concentration camps for American's of Japanese ancestry. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was the bombing mostly of a US military base not anything like the fire bombing of Tokyo. It was a case of Imperialist revenge much like the destruction of Afghanistan based upon the 9/11 attacks. About 3,000 died in 9/11 while over 100,000 were killed in Afghanistan and millions turned into refugees in one of the poorest countries in the world. The US was already secretly at war with Japan when it sent it military officers to assist the British Imperialists. Like the first world war it was an Imperialist war amongst the capitalist power over control of colonial wealth and power. The world is only so big and once the greedy ruling classes in the capitalist nations had divided and conquered it amongst themselves they went to war with each other to take the competitions markets and resources. Exploitation of the colonial slaves and denial of their independence made Europe and Americas ruling classes rich. This is why the British Imperialist opposed national bourgeois revolutions in the colonial world like the 1850 Taiping rebellion and supported the feudal reactionaries like their King instead.

@philcollins2546 The decision has nothing to do with creating equality rather its a decision by the ruling class to mask its own affirmative action by pretending to institute a system which can fairly access a college applicant. The decisions says not a word about those who buy their way into elite universities and education in general.
