  2. Probably a degree in idiotics. First you need coal to make steel. No modern world without steel. Second burning Natural gas or oil creates less not zero CO2. Third when using natural gas, oil or coal to make electricity capturing the CO2 is easier than when oil or natural gas is burned in a home or large buildings for heating, electricity or absorption type cooling.

  3. The coal companies and wall street decided a long time ago to locate other industries unnecessary to the coal industry elsewhere to keep the miners wages down. If you could work elsewhere than the companies would have to run better paying, cleaner and safer operations. Safety costs money but the company can always hire another miner.

  5. "Renewable energy" still requires the use of non renewable methods to capture and distribute. That wind generator uses iron, copper and aluminum. You need lots of electricity to make aluminum and copper out of ore. If I can take the CO2 generated by coal, gas or oil, feed it to a green plant GMO, than we can take advantage of the carbon cycle and make it just as reliable as other sunlight based renewables. Thorium molten salt nuclear reactors are the most promising new energy source technology. A number of countries and companies are working on the technology. Does that satisfy you Mr J***A**? The original post said nothing about renewability. All quote "renewable sources" (wind, solar and hydro) are based on sunlight either directly or indirectly.

  10. The workers are withdrawing from the Democratic Party of promises. This is a good sign it doesn't mean they are becoming Republicans. You can see that in the way the West VIrginia's school strike was fought out. The would not return to work with just a promise from a Republican governor. They demanded a bill be drawn up and passed first. They organized beyond just teachers and they did this all in a right to work state. While some maned the picket lines others went to occupy the capitol building. There slogan was "55 Strong" for all 55 counties. When they left after winning they chanted "Who makes History? We make history."

  14. Family farmers and ranchers vote Republican because they want to leave the farm to their children not having to sell half in order to pay the estate tax. Their struggle to keep their farms and ranches is a progressive one. The only former union man (SAG President) to be elected President was Ronald Reagan since his union busting of the PATCO union this is why the officials can't convince an ever shrinking membership to vote for any Republican. They and many of the leaders of the 1960's and 1970's social movements are Democrats by default. They refuse to do much of anything except be part of the Democratic Party vote catching machinery or talk about nominating Democrats to the Supreme court. As workers we don't have the same options our leaders do. They may be able to keep sitting in a Washington office talking to Senators and Congressmen but we have real economic problems and you can expect us to begin a fight back with or without them.

When I was young and you went down to the Employment Security office they actually had jobs they could send you to and when I say jobs I mean more than one. Now when you down they tell you about computers. "You need to apply online." So you fill out black hole applications and never even get a chance to make your case for why you would be a good worker if they couldn't hire you today. I worked at Sparrows Point, MD that was the highest real wages I ever made along with 15,000 other Steel Workers. Today they have a few night watchmen. The US makes more steel today than ever before of course it's all made in smaller unionless plants paying poverty wages.

You need organization and the best type of organization for demanding that change is a union and a political party controlled by the unions not a party that represents the 'community'. As for energy how about building molten salt thorium reactors. Plenty of ocean water for cooling nukes especially when you can build safe plants that do not go china syndrome. The last turn never bothered to turn off the lights in the Hot Mill. Now the place where thousands made steel for cars and refrigerators is empty except for night watchmen. We've been treated like Indians across the board. Promised the world while wall street robbed us blind.

Because coal is mostly used in industrial processes like making electricity and steel we can capture the CO2 released much easier than capturing the CO2 from natural gas or oil burned in homes for heat and cooking. Once captured the problem has been what to do with it. Some have advocated pumping it back down into the empty natural gas wells while others think it can be mixed with water to feed algae which could be used in some other way. The big elephant in the room is that this like other recycling is not profit friendly.

  36. We should reconsider nuclear energy. We have better monitoring technology that we didn't have at 3 mile island. A single design of a medium size plant could be replicated as a factory item assembled on site with multiple plants for more energy. During the recent Hueston hurricane the nuclear plant never went offline. Another design that was halted by Nixon because nuclear was safe is the molten salt design. This design is walkaway safe unlike the solid fuel nuclear plants. It still needs development which a number of countries and companies are doing.

We're anti-capitalists. The old are dependent because they can't work the way the young can. The companies want strong backs and weak minds. Private property, mineral rights and the sheriffs keep you from digging coal where ever you want but do you want your grandma going out with pickaxe digging coal? Or do want your grandma to be exempt? The companies control the government with campaign donations and ivy league education not the other way around. We need to replace that government not reform it. There was a big push for nuclear power in the 1950's because otherwise the government would need an excuse for building reactors for the plutonium needed in nuclear weapons. Reforms and regulations like EPA and MSHA are window dressing. Which are meant to control but can not stop capitalist greed. Right now their talking about need to regulate windmills. See if the windmills go up and they are hit with an ice storm when the ice melts it could damage the mill in a number of ways putting it off line. To fix the problem requires additional investment cost into every windmill with no corresponding return on investment. So the argument now is what to do. Add a regulation requiring ice safety or take the chance that an ice storm will knock out a large number of windmills and power across the northern midwest? For us the problem is not should we build it this way or that way but that the wealthy get to make the decision about something that could threaten the lives of millions of people yet all the numbers and facts are hidden due to private property and business secret laws.

I have no confidence in Trump but a reduction of tensions and a possible peace treaty is much better than a continued cold war with the DPRK. Obama could have gotten the same deal that Trump has accepted: no more practice invasions, nuclear bombing practice drills and we stop our testing. How is that bad? Obama got a peace prize and outside of exchanging diplomats with Cuba what did he do?
