  1. The important thing here is not that they won the most but that they were able to defeat the local ruling class who at first thought they would only need to offer a 1% raise to satisfy them. Instead they made a demand and backed it up with a strike and protest at the legislature. They refused to leave with just a promise and not a contract passed the legislature and signed by the governor. The did this despite threats to declare the strike illegal and divided them. They were ready for a long strike because they had organized to provide child care for those who depend on school as child care and to see to it that no one would be forced back to work by homelessness or starvation.
