Daniel Tammet is accused of being a fraud, not because he can't do amazing memory feats, but because he claims 'savant' status to what are fully teachable skills. He's not even the best. There's a book called 'Moonwalking with Einstein', which explores how people LEARN, even as adults, those 'superhuman' memory skills. And the 'seeing numbers' thing that Tammet does is actually what everyone in memory contests does - 'normal' people can learn to engage visual and spatial brain areas to boost abstract memory to astonishing levels. And before the invention of the printing press, these skills were routinely taught in universities, so people could memorize rare books. The mental math tricks are similar, you can get really good at mental math to where it looks superhuman. And again, it used to be more common. But we have calculators now, so no one bothers.
So you were right, Joe - we can all be superhumans. Its teachable.
And i didn't even mention Wim Hof.
