  1. um did you pay attention in 2016? Trump won BECAUSE of the Republican primary, and all the media coverage he got BEFORE the general. I've concluded this is usually true - primaries give you attention and 'earned' media. They bring attention to the party, and furthermore voting is a habit - if you get people excited for the primary, they are more likely to vote again in the general, even if its not their favorite candidate.
