Just a nitpick, there WAS a mass movement against slavery in Britain - there was a huge, organized sugar boycott and about 10% of all adults in the country signed a petition to end slavery (that's a huge number of people to PHYSICALLY sign a document in the 19th century). It was fear of election losses that led British politicians to push against the slave trade at the Congress of Vienna (despite their chief negotiator being pro-slavery).
