Don't know if you caught that, but Daniel Ellsberg DID try to help Nixon, sort of - he tried to convince Nixon in his first months in office that he could pull out of Southeast Asia completely and pin the whole disaster on the Democrats. But Nixon and Kissinger were too dumb and arrogant and thought they could "win".
