uh I'm sorry but you got the language stuff straight backwards: "Though dozens of languages were spoken, the only official languages were German and Hungarian" - I disagree, the Imperial bureaucracy printed legal documents and proceedings in 12 OFFICIAL languages, and courts were required to accept testimony in most of them. Only the military required soldiers to all speak German or Hungarian, for obvious practical reasons, and even then, they often had the legally recognized right to communicate in their native tongue in non-combat situations. I wouldn't argue that having no clear ethnic majority is bad, its kind of a feature, honestly. Apparently the British Empire had a lot more rebellion, defection and disloyalty from their ethnic minorities than the Austrian empire had during WWI, tho Austro-Hungary suffered from the entire extended royal family dropping dead and getting crushed militarily. Ethnic Nationalism became a lot more popular and radically separatist in the aftermath.
