  2. Its a prison for many people. Its a prison if we do it because of cultural pressure and a lack of exploring other possibilities, as is true for many people. At times they have been absolutely required - of women especially, literally survival depending on marriage, you're children would be taken from you if you weren't married. For men a respectable marriage and no PUBLIC infidelity was needed for respect and professional advancement. There is still a social and sometimes professional cost in the modern world of bucking the rules. So its not a totally free choice.
