  1. U have to regulate the field windings! If you loop the output directly into the field windings u dump all the output power into the field windings and it boggs itself down!

  2. It doesn't matter, that's an AC alternator, those have a 3 phase bridge rectifier build in. What's more important is to regulate the field windings, if u dump over 6V in those field windings they just turn into heaters and the field won't get much stronger. That's why it bogges down so hard without much of a load.
