It's not just fashion though. I'm Australian and I've always avoided the sun because of its association with skin cancer.

@icolky5272 I have travelled through out the UK and lots of young people would ask me what was our biggest danger, spiders, snakes etc, and I always said the sun is by far the most dangerous. Lots of tourists get hospitalized. And despite having always been careful I do have some small cancers. And I think you are right my husband is English and always gets around without a shirt.

@icolky5272 I'm actually rather fond of spiders. We have ants that give a nastier bite than most spiders. When we were dating my husband killed a spider on the wall. Only to discover the spider had a name and I'd been keeping it as it was effective at killing bad spiders. No my husband didn't work outdoors. He just associates being able to go outside barefoot without a shirt as part of living in Australia. Your poor young friend. The last time I got sunburnt it was my hands, the only unprotected part.

@icolky5272 Thankyou as well. It's nice to have an actual conversation, instead of focusing on gloom and doom. Most spiders are not very venomous really, and I don't handle them unless to remove one from someone who is frightened of them. You seem to be very well travelled, which would have been exciting. I agree with you about nature. It's all a balance. Sadly it's disappearing though. I grew up in the outer suburbs of Brisbane. Dirt roads and water tanks. Backyards full of echidnas, possums and koalas. And yes snakes and other reptiles too. But today it's six lanes of asphalt from the city, high density housing with lots of concrete, and no native animals at all. Soon it will be winter and hubby will need to cover up for a few months LoL.
