Gibraltar was able to strike a deal with Spain that allowed them to join the EU Schengen zone. Because Gibraltar along with the ‘Channel Islands’ are all ‘Crown Dependencies’. These are all self governing tax havens, which only depend on the U.K. for defence. Gibraltar could easily have voted to become part of Spain. But because ‘Crown Dependencies’ are not part of the United Kingdom, but are self-governing possessions of the British Crown. They enjoy the benefits of self rule and being a ‘tax haven’ which is one of the perks. Scotland is unable to do likewise because Scotland is a devolved administration not a ‘ Crown Dependency’ and Scotland is part of the United Kingdom .. It cannot join the EU Schengen zone unfortunately. Unless the Scottish people vote to leave the U.K. with another Referendum.

@ Jochen Stacker Scotland voted in a referendum to stay in the U.K. The referendum vote to leave the EU was a U.K. vote. Scotland exports 80% of its goods to England. There would be a huge cost to the Scottish economy if it were to lose its access to the U.K. single market through Independence.

@jochenstacker7448 . Maybe you will never understand the benefits of Brexit. You should honour democracy. We won back our sovereignty through a democratic vote. We now control our laws our money and our borders. People voted to live in a free country without the constraints of the EU. If you are so miserable you can always move.
