  9.  @chudchadanstud  ....Thank you for your informative reply. According to the British history books, which may differ from the French history books... the French government was in a major financial crisis in 1789. The king had borrowed heavily to maintain a lavish lifestyle. The government had borrowed huge amounts to fight and destroy Great Britain in the ‘Seven Year War’ and to help the Americans in the Revolutionary War. Having built up a huge amount of French debt, the king had no other option than to raise taxes. The poor people of France (the Third Estate) had to pay even higher taxes even though they were already suffering from starvation and malnutrition. These high taxes angered the poor people, especially since the heartless nobility didn't have to pay a penny in tax. The poor people only had bread to eat. But when the cost of bread skyrocketed ... the poor French people were now dying of malnutrition. At that time Queen Marie-Antoinette didn’t seem to care ... she was happy spending vast amounts of France's money on her extravagant lifestyle even though she knew the economy of France was struggling. When Queen Marie-Antoinette was asked, “What the people should do, when they had no bread to eat”, Queen Marie-Antoinette replied "Let them eat cake”. Maybe if Queen Marie-Antoinette had been more sympathetic and had toned down her lifestyle ...her poor husband ... King Louis XVI would not have lost his head. Since Great Britain fought with France more than any other country in history. I often wondered why the ‘Channel Islands’ are not part of France, since they are closer to France than Britain....just asking?
