  1. The US spends more on education than nearly every country. We have a 3 tiered system. Private, suburban govt run schools and urban govt run schools. Most private and suburban govt run schools are good to excellent. Nearly all urban govt run schools are the worst schools in the western world. Poor teach pay is due to a few reasons. Private schools rely on parental money, which for some 70% of private schools are not rich parents. As a result, most private school teachers make less than government run schools. Here in California, if you take the total budget and divide it by the number of students, it amounts to $35K per student. They will say that this is not what they have. But…..this is what they are wasting. Oh, BTW, they underfund the teachers pensions by 40% per year. If the government run schools here didn’t waste so much in overhead, they easily could pay more. I am on the board of a private Christian K thru 8. We charge $8K. Our teachers make 20% less than the government run teachers. And they have no retirement nor lifetime medical. Our students graduate 2 grades ahead of decent suburban government run schools. If you gave our school $35K per kid, we’d build a brand new school and double the teachers salaries the next day.
