  4. My Dad and his 6 siblings were born in Buffalo in the 1930’s and 40’s. When he was legal to drink, he saw bars that had “no Italian” signs on the lakefront. I asked, “what did you do?” He said, “We went to bars without the sign.”

  5. In 1983, I worked at Bell Aerospace in Wheatfield NY. They were still producing RADAR for the carrier landing systems. The older guys told me how they noticed that the RADAR antenna would work up things that were close. They told me that they’d put their bag lunches in front of the RADAR range and warm up their lunches.

  7. The C-47s were great. I hired on at McDonnell Douglas in 1990. They still had one of the old Factory buildings putting out DC9s. Those buildings are gone now around Long Beach Airport.

  10. I was born in the italian section of Buffalo. They stuck together. We moved to the suburbs when I was 2. My dad retained his Italian network throughout his life. Ethnic jokes and slurs in those days was about the different European groups. They intermarried. My aunt married a polish man which wasn’t OK except that he was Catholic.

  13. I was working at Sikorsky helicopter in 1985. One of my black engineering friends had photo of a help wanted sign from NYC to dig subways. It was by race/ethnicity Irish, Blacks and Italians on the bottom with the smallest wage.

  17. Every city in the US is in rapid decline. It’s too bad. I grew up in a rust belt area and their decline wasn’t because of bad policy but macroeconomic factors. Now, cities are declining because of one party rule. They are simply ideological and do t really try to fix things. The schools are the worst in the western world, homelessness is rampant, DAs aren’t prosecuting crimes, and now, white collar jobs can work from home. Now that the mom and pops have been run out of business, what’s left? A few museums and some concerts. Commute to that, enjoy it and leave to a place with a higher standard of living and safety. I am 50 miles from LA. I’ve lived here for 35 years. LA has 50,000 homeless now. The UN visited here and declared us the third worst city on the planet in terms of homelessness.

  21. I lived in a house in Niagara Falls, NY. It was used as part of the Underground Railroad. They would provide housing for the escaped person and then go up river (the house was close to the Falls) and take a rope raft to Canada.
