When Kurzgesagt mentioned that when the pyramids were being built there were still mammoths on the Earth, I imagined herds of them sweeping majestically over the Steppes... didn't really think of a tiny, declining island population up in the arctic.

I love how in the last few decades the story of "snowball earth" has grown from a little fringe theory and I've got to watch more and more details cone together.

I've found that after about THREE YEARS SOLID of clicking on "not interested", I've managed to hold the crapflood more-or-less at bay.

I read a comic in which future man had gone back to the Cretaceous to hunt dinosaurs for meat. In that they illustrated "terrible hand" as being identical to "terrible claw" (Deinonychus) but with finger-claws instead of toe-claws... (And both very much like what @Vespuchian says... super-predators) At the time, I wondered how many of these dinosaurs were simply invented by the comic's writers and artists.... years later I found Deinonychus was real, and it's nice, today to be introduced to Deinocheirus too.

Our cat says that the smell of citrus fruit is absolutely disgusting... maybe as we evolved post-gulop we learned to love the "stink" of oranges because, suddenly, we needed them.

It's an old thought that if you look at the stages of embryonic development it looks a bit like you're replaying evolution.... well some of those microfossils look a lot like a blastocyst which is about as far back as you can go. :) Also.... WOAH! Checking out Kallie's sweater with great jealousy... I want one!

That pun they shall call the Abomination of Desolation.
2
An episode about Andrewsarchus would be good.

That was marvelous... I love evolutionary biology and people saying "butt hole"... so thanks for that.

That does explain how our eyes are so rubbish compared to (e.g.) birds.
1
More like bacteria pee.... but, yeah.
1
You should stop saying "hobbit"... you'll get sued by The Estate of JRR Tolkien. ;)
1
But that's the thing with clades... domains, kingdoms, phyla.... all that heirachical stuff becomes nonsense.... cladistics is all kinda egalitarian... we're all just clades now!
1
I love the fact that digs into the "pre-pottery neolithic" have discovered some... erm... well... pottery! We have an adage in computer science that one of the hardest problems is "naming things". :)
1
I'm not sure if it's because I'm on headphones or if you've changed your production style.... but the music in this episode is excellent......... apart from that rather abrupt cut right at the end.

With most of the earth under water, you would think so.
1
Have you ever done Andrewsarchus.... hello pigs always make me think of killer sheep.
1
That CO2 they didn't have then... well, we're letting it all back out now.
1
This is the massive problem we have when arguing with creationists..... the fossil record is..... kinda patchy sometimes.
1
Is this in any way linked to "The Boring Billion"????
1
I like this theory.... mostly because it puts The Great Filter a LONG WAY behind us.... but bearing in mind it happened at least twice in Earth's history, I'm not so sure it's true.
1
Yeah... yeah.... do Ambulocetus!
1
Family, Genus, Kingdom and all that is a bit "100 years ago".... they're all just miss-filed clades after all.
1
I like how the paleontologists have put a building over the fossil bed.
1
This is one of your best videos ever.... Just because it's got so many "don't knows" in it.
1
There's a life hack in this story... don't defecate in your own swimming pool!
1
Good German and Swahili lessons from Eons here.
1
LUCA can't have scarfed a bacterium because LUCA is the ancestor of all bacteria.
1
It's nice to see these here on YouTube because if they were only anywhere else, I don't think I'd have found them. I like the style, music and calmer talking is nicer for me than the more "pow, zap, zoom" of your usual YouTube videos.

Whenever I buy anything from DFTBA, I end up paying huge amounts of import duty on it... which is a great pity because I'd love an Eons enamel pin.
1
Now you've done dimetrodon, you've got to do eryops.
1
I wanted LLVPs to be bits of Thea... I'm glad to see that idea is still holding on.... continental graveyards are cool (anything with "graveyard" in it's name gets instant "goth points") but I'm still a sucker for any theory that says "yeah, Earth is unusual because Thea!".
1
Also pay more atention to the timescales.... if we did it your great great great great great great............ grandchildren would be long long long long long dead before even the first results started to show.
1
Nice music in this episode.
1
Homo habilis is "a tough call"... but "genus" is an arbitary selection and has more to do with nomenclature than "reality". We need more use of clades and then we can do away with this kingdom, genus and whatnot.
