In general, monogamy and the great religions did not enforce mating down on women, it encouraged mating across the ranks, top ranks with top ranks, middle with middle, the bottom with the bottom etc. Of course, there were exceptions, congruent with the level of freedom in a society. Men were happy to 'trade down' in terms of money for access to fertility, fitness etc. Very few women mated down, their standards were more realistically aligned than now.
