The UK has been drifiting towards the American societal standard of individualism. We are seeing the same cracks in our society as they see in theirs. We need to become a more equal society, with people being less focused on their individual success and more on the success of everyone.

Once you have decided this is so, you are part of the problem. I don't hold that view. I think there are things we can do together to solve the problems we have.

@kieran4434 If you refuse to do anything about it, then yes.

@leejohnson3209 I agree! The student loan system is going to produce very unequal outcomes, and that isn't good for the UK.

One of my uncle's had a learning difficulty, but held down a job as a CNC Programmer for many, many years, much to the surprise of his family. This is because his 'disability' was incredibly useful when programming CNC machines because he could deal with the level of detail that the machines needed, while 'normal' people struggled to do so. With Artificial Intelligence disrupting all forms off work, we need senior managers in businesses to ensure that opportunity remains available to all who want it.

In the UK, we have never valued the role of the Manager. Most managers are promoted with no support or training. It is unsurprising that large numbers of them make a mess of it?

The application process described in the video might be appropriate for employers who are hiring on a long-term basis, e.g. Officer Selection in the Army, Airforce or Navy, or for Management Training schemes at top employers where the successful candidates will have a great deal spent on their development, but it is completely inappropriate for the majority of jobs that young people without degrees will be applying for. This behaviour clearly isn't as a result of it being difficult to dismiss someone who is not able to do the work. I suspect it is due to a lack of trust within organisations. Hiring managers aren't trusted to get it right, so they make the candidates jump through hoops to secure even basic jobs.

Very interesting video Richard. Thanks for making it. I agree that organisations do not respect the people applying to join them. While free market capalists will argue that there is no commercial imperative to provide young people with opportunities, there is a very great societal risk if we don't!
