  1. Correct, but slip rings aren't perfect conductors either, and they wear out, which can mean reliability problems.

Being able to alther the strenght of the magnetic field potentially has an application in wind turbines where the strength could be altered to exactly match the torque available from the wind (implementing MPPT via the winding rather than by boosting the output voltage), and to aid starting. In theory, the turbine could also be braked, but to avoid overheating, it is better to dump the excess electricty as heat (or to a battery) and only use electric braking as a backup to friction braking when the turbine is at a standstill.

  4. Yes, it's abrushless motor, but whereas the brushless motors in your power tools have magnets in them, these motors don't require magnets.

  5. I don't think it would create any efficiency gains. It's cheaper to only have to vary the field in one set of windings. It might give some extra fine control at very lower speed, but I doubt it.
