@GeigerFarm Russian is learning a hard lesson. Both the Russian leaders and the people will be wiser when this war ends.

Having Ukraine a "buffer zone" makes no sense because there are numerous NATO members that have borders with Russia. The only reason Putin wants to de-militarise Ukraine is so that they cannot fight when he tries to steal Donetsk and Luhansk. Zelensky should not agree that Ukraine will not join NATO if it wants to do so. Ukraine is a sovreign nation and so can decide who it allies with and for what purpose. Putin has no say on what happens in Ukraine.

@quartinium6079 The coup reversed the direction of movement that Ukraine was taking so that instead of moving closer to Russia, it moved closer to Europe. The Ukrainians in Donbas didn't like this because they have closer ties to Russia than the rest of Ukraine. Of course the West would support Ukraine, because the coup was supported by the majority of the population in Ukraine. Only in Donbas were the majority of Ukranians not in favor of the coup. But Ukranians in Donbas can't just decide to invite another country in to take over Ukrainian territory. The Ukrainains who live in Donbas and don't want closer ties with Russia also have a say. The failure here is that Ukraine and the Ukrainians did not resolve the issue quickly or without bloodshed. Russia should not have invaded Donbas. They had no right to meddle in the internal politics of a foreign country. Russia should have supported the Ukrainian government to arrive at a peaceful solution.

@mysticmarble94 Wise words.

@wli2718 The reality being that Russia has stolen part of Ukraine. There is a scenario where Ukraine does not lose land. It is the scenario where the Ukraine beat the Russian army. Four weeks ago this would have been unthinkable, but now, who knows?

@mrchepelopez1818 President Put-it-in of Russia started the war. He invaded Ukraine.

@GundamReviver They might have to accept his terms, so Russia will win the war, but will have lost much more than they would gain.

@altar7885 No, they know Russia invaded Crimea, that it is Russian territory, and that the cannot be respect for Russia until Crimea is free.

What deals have Ukraine broken? I'm curious.

It's not just about Donbass. It's about rebuilding the Soviet Union. If Putin subjugates Ukraine, and takes control of its natural resources (including its vast tracts of rich agricultural land), other previous Soviet states might see some value in allying with Russia. It is not about protecting Russia from NATO. A) NATO is a defensive alliance B) lots of NATO members already border Russia.

@Level 70 A single use, disposable weapon costing $40,000 that can destroy a $1,000,000 Russian tank is more than useful.

Zelensky has not armed all civilians, he doesn't have enough guns to do so. He has guns for about 900,000 civilians sat most. This is about 2.5% of the remaining population in Ukraine. So just 2.5% of the population are legitimate targets because they are fighting Russia.

The more desperate Putin becomes, the more likely he is to make another error. He cannot bomb or poison Ukraine into submission. It is a country of 44 million people!

@jarivuorinen3878 Thank you for your reply. This is the real explanation.
