  3.  @RomanHistoryFan476AD  60,000 less than the c500,000 people who die in the UK each year, but the argument against locking down to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 ISN'T to stop 60,000 people dying but to prevent the 2.4 million who would die if the virus wasn't held in check. Currently 3.7% of people who catch Covid-19 will die. The UK population is 66.6 million currently, so this mortality rate will kill 2.4 million people. That is not a drop in the ocean.

  4. I think the goal is to save peoples lives. I've seen nothing to suggest the UK government has any interest in creating a cashless society. However, biometric identification is coming.

  8. No, the laws that underpin lockdown have been voted for by the majority on MPs. The unelected scientific advisers only suggest what the laws should say. And I would want the country's best scientists to advise the government, because few politicians are scientists. The PM is a journalist by trade! What does he know of epidemiology?

He does need to see his family and to be able to make friends, but if they are carrying a virus that can kill him (or more likely you and your parents), it would be unwise to let him be very close to them. The pandemic will be over soon enough. Compliance with the rules on social distancing and lockdown will make this happen more quickly. Total deaths in the UK are normally about 500,000 per year. Covid-19 is currently killing about 3.7% of people who catch it, so that's 2.4 million people!

  13. The thing is that Sage is a group of scientific advisors, not a group of politicians. The Sage group didn't want to be in power, they wanted to be the best scientists they could be, which is probably they are best placed to advise the government. Lockdown should only end when amount of virus has been reduced to the point where Test and Trace can work effectively. It cannot work at the rates we saw in September and October.

  18. Unfortunately it takes a long time to get out of prison for murder, and just a few years to vote a government out of office. It's perhaps not surprising that those with murderous intent decide the wield the knife in the ballot box and not elsewhere. The Irish tried killing each other to make political changes, and yet it was diplomacy and discussion that worked on the island.
