@bloccoaspirale1867 I am inclined to agree with this advice, as avoiding being arrested can be beneficial, e.g. when travelling to the USA and US Immigration ask "Have you ever been arrested?"

I would say not. An adverse inference would be unsafe if no questions were put to you because you did not attend a voluntary interview. There is also some protecting in the fact that the interview is "voluntary", assuming the police are honest when reporting that you failed to attend an intervierw that they told you was voluntary.

The best thing to do is to use the phrase given in one of the comments above: "I fully intend to help you with your enquiries and answer all your questions as best I am able but I wish to have a solicitor present with me when I do". You are effectively forcing the interview to be a formal one, but my feeling is that this is better all round.
