If you want to learn more about how the UK legal system works (and doesn't work), try to get a copy of a book called The Secret Barrister and have a read. It is rather hair-raising.

This is good advice; going to court is often a lottery. Avoiding court if you can is a good strategy.

@Gryffster That justice should prevail and the courts should be impartial and sensitive is a target that should always be aimed for, but in a court system that is staffed and used by humans, and underfunded, those admirable aims are not always going to be met.

#2 Evidence is everything. This is especially true in business. Unfortunately many business decisions are made on the basis of opinions or emotions by lazy people who cannot be bothered to gather the evidence that is available. Making your decisions on the basis of evidence can avoid many problems, including that of group-think where everyone agrees with a decision, and but is based on an incorrect opionion that everyone happens to share.

#3 It is perhaps worth considering why Dates and Times are "everything". I think the answer is that either you have an unimpeachable source for the date and time (like an email or timestampped CCTV footage) OR the event was so important to you at the time that you made a contemporaneous note about it. This leads to the decisionmaker understanding the importance of the event in relation to the case. Also, humans can relate to a chronology better than many other forms of presenting information. They can see the interconnections better, and they can also make inferences (sometimes incorrect) from the periods when actions did NOT occur.
