Your confusion may have arisen from hitler's party and his fake claims that he was a socialist, but socialists were his first victims. Hitler established a National Bishop and repeatedly identified himself as a christian in speeches you can still read, and to some extent an avenger of christ. He was sanctioned by the Pope and churches in Germany were full on Sundays. I've known a lot of Germans who lived through the war. They were all church going Catholics, not pagans. that was from what I understand a splinter movement in the gestapo.
