  1. Avenues tend to carry more traffic through a populous area, while streets are a condensed-version carrying less traffic to residences. Granted it's different in certain places but typically "Avenues" are a continuous thoroughfare of linking a road/pike/highway to residential streets. That's the formula here in Maryland.
