  2. It's the same way with mainland USA and Alaska or Hawai'i or Puerto Rico. Onlu way into Alaska is via Canada; Hawai'i is dead center in the ocean; Puerto Rico is in the Carribean surrounded by a numerous chain of islands, so saying Sicily with mainland Italy is the correct way of explaining things

  3. Technically, no. Its because of the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia. Trying to build "anything" in that jungle zone is the land equivalent to the Strait of Gibralter.
