But keep in-mind... The 737 MAX is nothing more than a "rebuilt" 60-year-old 737. The thought is that this MCAS system is only a minor 'lug nut' in the aircraft's overall design, so the certification practices weren't as stagnant as if it was a BRAND NEW aircraft. The pilots could have known but it's one thing to be flying 737-700s for the past 10 years then suddenly a 737 MAX 8 appears on the runway the next day.

The only way their pockets would hurt is if all major airline carriers decide to ground 737s (not just MAX 8s) entirely. It's the "Toyota Corolla" of the airline industry. Boeing will see the impact and watch them quickly run to the drawing board for a new aircraft.
