  3. Some people innocently buy hardware with OS and Apps that are not genuine or original. The end consumer isn't aware of this and only comes to know of it during a situation and by that time he has already paid for what he had budgeted and is trapped. This happens a lot in third world countries where PCs are bought from grey markets and sold to customers. There has to be regulations and education on this to protect consumers.

  9. If the encrypted folder inside Overdrive on the PC has been deleted can the cryptomator be helpful in recovering? What if Hackers even though online cannot access the information from the encrypted folders in Onedrive if they delete the entire folder and then those changes sync to the PC. Then all is gone. Does image backup such as EasUS ToDo on PC backup the encrypted folders on OneDrive on PC?

  13. When backing up PC I'm unsure if Google Drive files and folders on the PC have been backed up as well after what you explain with OneDrive. Something weird is happening in Google Drive. 1. Under Google Drive Settings it indicates that files are on the cloud or in other words online but not mirrored to the PC. 2. Under Google Drive>My Drive I right click and under properties it shows the size of files and folders and all of them are occupying disk space on the PC. 3. All folders and files under My Drive in Windows Explorer show the empty cloud icons 4. Any file I opened under My Drive opens fast without downloading. 5. When right clicking any file or folder under My Drive it gives an option to keep this file or folder offline. 1,3, and 5 above suggest that the files and folders are online without local copies. 2 and 4 above seem to suggest that the files and folders are local while on the cloud too. There are no sync issues or error messages in the Google Drive icon running in the taskbar tray on the PC. The above is quite contradictory, inconsistent and confusing.

  14. What gets synced in case of a Microsoft account? If one does use a Microsoft account (e g. Hotmail), does it sync properly moving on, meaning all the info like Profile Photo, Account name etc will be in sync between PC and web? Also, why do people recommend setting up PC with a local account instead of a Microsoft account? I don't think in Windows 10 it's difficult setting up a local account. Why it's different in Windows 11?

  15. With a365 subscription do you get full Teams? The personal Teams is lacking in some features and icons on left panel- Call, creating Teams (one can create communities)..MS does not even document these omissions.

It would be better to set up local rules on the email client on PC to automatically make copies of all incoming and sent emails to local folder in the email client, then those local email folders get backed up as part of the email client's periodic automatic backup on the PC. Leaving mails in the live folder inside email client would make it dangerously be in one place and when there is an issue (such as hacking, corruption, deleted emails etc) it would be replicated on the live folder in the email client. My preference then is to have mails copied to local folders as they are immune to synchronisation and hence can act as backup on their own without the email client's backup routine. Having emails in the live folder in the email client on the PC can only act as good backup so long as the PC is not connected to the internet. Of course there is no reason not to include those emails in external backups as part of one's overall backup strategy.

  17. This may be irrelevant but I found eM Client to be very clean and feature packed. A good alternative to New Outlook on PC which is very slow and clunky. I am looking forward to their mobile version after they ramp it up and incorporate on it Tasks, Calendars and Contacts that sync with all cloud accounts - just like their desktop version.

  21. We have to think how thieves could beat the system before we can understand what areas to look out for. Best way is to stop using the internet or email. And use a separate machine with no apps and data to get online and that also for consumption only with no creation. Is that practical today?

If image backup in addition to other local and PC contents includes cloud files and emails (e.g. Google Drive, OneDrive, Gmail, Hotmail emails on Email Clients such as Thunderbird..), what happens during restore to these cloud emails and files? After restoring backup do they get overwritten to the latest state from cloud servers during synchronization? Between backup point and restore point there could be number of changes to cloud emails and files.

Is it to create extra hard disk space on the PC? And by doing this (using OneDrive as a dumb drive), would the PC need to be connected to the internet all the time? May be I am missing something or did not understand properly.

  29. What about the data generated by some apps that are run out of the cloud? You end up having a mini ERP running on the cloud - your Books, CRM, DMS etc that one might be using. Some applications don't have a sync mechanism to your desktop or native backup features and operate natively from the cloud via browser.

  30. On my PC EaseUS to do backup does not backup G:\ Google Drive data even if the folders/files under the Drive are set to be available offline. The files backup produced by EaseUS on my external HDD after completing backup shows it is blank (empty folder!). This is crazy.

The Computer technician told me that I could use the removed disk as an external or backup drive provided I have a housing. What housing or enclosure can I use?   32. Some questions on Passkeys, security and Threats (Malware, Virus..). If Passkeys is deployed as means of authentication and if a hacker online has access to an alternate authentication/verification method such as an alternate email, that hacker can get into the online account by by-passing Passkeys and getting an online code to gain access via that hacked alternate email for instance. This rubbishes Passkeys. All the buzz about Passkeys, 2FAs, security is really for securing online accounts and services such as Google and Microsoft Accounts (these two are the major ones that come to mind). However after all the safe proofing if there is a malware or virus attack on a device, it would grant open access to those accounts that are logged in and in sync on that device. This means that emails, contacts, documents, etc would get exposed. This would also make a mockery of all the safe proofing of online accounts. Is my assessment correct?

  35. I use a Hotmail account to log in but use a PIN on the PC and it allows me to log in without internet connection. (I think when setting up the PC I went with a MS account or added one and others later.) A small business I know had purchased the MS365 subscription for 2-3 users. When setting up a new laptop for a new staff the IT company said they would create a local log in on that PC for the staff and I was like asking why; why not use their work MS365 email/ credentials. They responded by saying for that the company had to be on MS Azure or had to subscribe to that. Whatever that is.

Just some thoughts on technology: considering the internet connectivity is an offending variable, can't cloud backup solutions be configured to backup from could ecosystems - Google, Microsoft - directly and then they (the cloud backup solution) only pick up the files and folders that are local on the PC (this can be defined by the user) and exclude anything on the PC that is in sync with Google, Microsoft, etc ecosystems - Google Drive, OneDrive etc. By this way the cloud backup solution is backing up user's cloud data directly from the cloud (,i.e. cloud to cloud) which forms bulk of our stuff these days and only picks up stuff for backup from user's PC that is local. It would be faster that way, wouldn't it.

  37. I use an external keyboard. I ran into a problem once. I was getting persistent spell check message window in Office Word /Excel and Turn on/off caret browsing window message in Chrome and on desktop. They were erratic messages. I tried various things including detaching the laptop from the external monitor and external keyboard and mouse but the situation persisted. It turned out that the laptop's F keys, particularly the F7 key was depressed and slanting on the right side and that seemed to give rise to these intermittent errors. I checked that physically. I also figured out how to disable the laptop keyboard. I guess if and when and where parts become available I might get the laptop keyboard repaired. For now problem solved. The external keyboard comes very handy and needy in such cases.

  38. Just sharing something sightly different but weird. It could happen to anyone. I received an email in my Hotmail. Opened it up in my Outlook for Mobile on my Android. Quickly replied and hit send. Apparently there was no internet yet mobile data and wifi were on. It was that wifi was very poor. I refreshed many times. However the email did not go or appear as sent. It was not appearing in any other folders either. I quickly went to my PC and opened up the email client. I refreshed several times. Only the incoming email appeared in the inbox. No email appeared in Sent items and no outgoing email stuck in outbox either. However weirdly the email appeared as half composed in the sent folder on the email client on the PC. I then deleted that half composed email from the sent folder that appeared as sent to the recipients. I then quickly disconnected the phone from mobile data and WiFi. I even uninstalled Mobile Outlook on my phone to prevent it from sending out the missing email reply. I then composed another reply and sent the email from the PC. This email was sent successfully and appeared in the sent folder. Shortly afterwards, the original email from the Mobile that had disappeared mysteriously also appeared in the sent folder a minute later in the email client on the PC. It was very embarrassing to have Outlook/Hotmail to have sent out two email replies with slightly different messages to the recipients. Outlook Mobile does not even have an Outbox. I hate Outlook Mobile! BTW email client I use is eM Client.

  39. Most of us without giving second thoughts keep our data in sync between PC and cloud. As you have pointed out it is the same one place although appears on multiple devices and the cloud. This means we don't have a backup. Question is realistically what are the chances of things going wrong with current setup i.e. current setup sans physical backup?

  43. I would not like using the term copy of the file on PC, Onedrive. It implies that there are copies of the same document across PC, Onedrive web, devices etc meaning separate documents that are in sync. I like to consider it as one document or same document that appears on and accessible from PC, Onedrive web, mobile etc all up to date and in sync across devices That's the end user experience. I like to view it as same document appearing in different places, accessible in different form probably (e.g. Web Word vs Desktop Word) and with different UIs.

  44. The important point as you may have mentioned in other posts, the Cloud files have to be always on PC or available offline or mirrored on PC. Then only the external backups will capture the files and folders. If they are on "free up space" mode the backups would not capture.

  45. Dear Leo: My machine came pre installed with Office 2016 Pro. Then there is things like Excel Mobile and Office 365App also on the PC. I am able to work on Office 2016 Pro. However when i try opening Excel Mobile it won't let me use the software and it will present a pop up box talking of a MS 365 subscription. When i try opening the Office 365App it gives me an error message. Having multiple same or similar Apps and software can be confusing. Do we uninstall these office apps from the PC before subscribing to a MS365 plan? And if so what is the steps or process to remove these and all traces of them. Also what are the steps of downloading and installing the 365 apps on a PC after subscribing to a plan. I am considering the 365 family plan. Thank you.

I know of someone who subscribed to the single user 365 plan and hadn't downloaded any entitled Office apps, wasn't aware of what was installed on the PC, wasn't aware of OneDrive 1TB storage entitlement, wasn't sure about how to use the Office apps and OneDrive, was accessing most of the stuff over the MS365 cloud (emails, documents via web versions of Outlook, Word, PowerPoint etc (the web apps are free anyway)), and was knowingly, unknowingly saving documents in OneDrive and other areas. Ultimately all stuff was strewn all over the place - Outlook attachments, OneDrive, Downloads folder and other areas on the PC. When asked reason for subscribing, the person kind of figured that "additional functionality" was needed. Wasted money I feel. And now the subscription is cancelled though the functionality is needed. I feel sorry for such people for being technologically challenged and subscribing and not subscribing for the wrong reasons. Thank God I am not that technologically challenged.

  48. Strangely I encountered my first duplicate files on my PC today due to a OneDrive sync issue. Surprisingly, there was no error message in the OneDrive app sync log or any warning icons next to the files (all files had the Onedrive tick icons) beside a pop-up from Onedrive mentioning about the creation of the duplicate files. The problem is that edits made in the Onedrive cloud don’t sync back to the files on the PC, while PC edits update the cloud files instantly. This issue occurred with Excel files, but I’m unsure if it affects others. The only fix is restarting OneDrive application or the PC. I'm using Windows 10 Pro with Office 2016. No issue with internet connection. This is unacceptable from Microsoft.

  55. Microsoft has focused on and moved more to Corporate audience. For home users it is stressful and difficult conceptualising the features functions and navigating and UI when they just want to get things done. And then you would have people thousands of miles away searching for answers from various forums such as this, which would partially answer the questions because obviously they would not know the specific problems faced. Then such peoples' only hope is personalised face to face help and training.
