@richardschenk4058 Sure. And how did those economic reforms take place? Incentives to join the EU, partnership and trade deals and ultimately access to the inner market. My point still stands, and they've gone from beggars to leeches.

@rutessian please elaborate In what ways are the EU akin to the USSR? Personal freedom? Civil rights? Private property? Free speech? Free elections? Independent courts? Freedom of movement? Please. Elaborate.

@richardschenk4058 If they opposed consensus EU values and policies, while taking their cash, then yes. They would be. But they don't. But the cases are not exactly the same are they? The Meds were severely impacted by the financial crisis (and still are), and on top of that the immigration crisis of 2015-16, which is yet to be resolved especially for Greece. And what did Poland or Hungary do? How many migrants did they offer to take to alleviate their fellow European countries? What aid did they offer? Very ironic since these two countries have the largest percentage of expats living and working in the EU. Have I made their hypocrisy and bigotry clear by now?

@Jake12220 "The EU isn't even democratic, it's primarily run by bureaucrats" You DO know that there are elections and even the "undemocratic" parts ie the commission and council are composed of representatives appointed and/or elected in their home country, right? Tell me, in what way is the UK itself more democratic? Does Scotland and NI effectively have a veto in Westminster? Is the UK ruled by (slow) consensus, compromise and negotiation? The UK left because... Well, who the fuck knows, really. Populism, migration, Ignorance, fucking Queen Victoria? Not even the Brits know why they left if you ask them. As in 60% would rejoin today if there was a referendum. The EU is by no means perfect, and I'm not an EU federalist. Many reforms are needed and indeed, it's a slow and heavy bureaucratic machine. I will however defend that the EU is a singular succes in history in promoting peace, stability, democracy and prosperity across national borders.

@wilhelmu Perhaps. Although no one in the EU has been forcibly removed due to collectivization or industrial output. But it's really a minor point compared to the lack of civil liberties. And let me add another another very important right: You can voluntarily leave the EU TLDR: Anyone who compares the USSR with the EU have no fucking clue what theyre talking about.

@wilhelmu I see your point. I don't have an answer to that. But at the very least we should admit that Iraqi and Afghan refugees were indeed a cause of wars conducted and/or supported by many nations in the EU. You can't set a house on fire and then be surprised when people come asking for a bucket of water or a place to stay. But I digress: Laws and rights are in place exactly to prevent this kind of arbitrary judgment that have huge impact on people's lives. No matter how you twist and turn it, it IS discrimination. And where do you draw the line? Is it okay for Hungary in the future to deny asylum to people from the same country that are LGBT for example? (not that anyone would wish to live in Hungary as it is) Why not? Isn't it their national sovereign right? I'm angry at Poland, Hungary etc. not only because they refused to accept any refugees from the ME or wherever. It's mainly because they essentially refused to aid Greece, Spain and Italy in any meaningful way. If only in solidarity for their fellow Europeans, as they have said so many times we should do these last few months. And ironically, these people are the largest groups of migrants (percentage of population) in the rest of the EU.

@wilhelmu Except we have all signed a charter where the right to seek asylum (not to get asylum, mind you) is in fact a human right. When you close the borders and refuse fleeing people entry to even try to apply, that's a defacto human rights violation. But it's mostly a semantic point, as many countries (and citizens) don't really care about it. I agree with you with regards to "normal" migration. That's a more complex issue with regards to free movement in the EU. The irony is that the EU and the treaty for asylum seekers (don't remember which is the exact one) which mandates asylum in the country of registration/entry has "protected" many countries from great numbers of asylum seekers in 2015-16. And yet, nationalists/populists like Le Pen, Orban and PiS would have you believe that it's better without these EU treaties. I'm all for helping Ukraine and refugees from Ukraine. But the difference in treatment of groups of refugees is unsettling.
