  1. The EU, and France's Sarkozy in particular, shit the bed when it came to Turkey and their admission to the EU. Bulgaria and Romania were admitted despite having clearly weaker economies, development and higher levels of corruption. That Turkey seeks to extract a price from NATO for any concessions is therefore not at all a surprise considering their strategic value to the alliance.

  2. Turkey is more important strategically for NATO than Finland and Sweden as the latter two offer a "win more" situation in the North Sea and Baltic whereas Turkey offers unique strategic options with regards to Russia and the greater Middle East.
