  1. The Belt and Road worked exactly as intended: Loans used for infrastructure projects undertaken by Chinese companies. If you can pay back the loan, great. If not, most countries had vital infrastructure as collateral. So you either became a friend and trade partner or you became an indirect political actor, integral to the finances of the country. All of it based on the promise of increased trade and prosperity that wouldn't necessarily materialise.
