  1. From a strategic standpoint, I can't understand why Russia "only" annexed Crimea in 2014, and then attempted the takeover of Ukraine 8 years later. It bought Ukraine prescious time to organize their forces, get support from the West and achieve valuable battle experience in the fighting in Donetsk and Luhansk. The answer is probably that they didn't have the strength, but you'd assume that they at least would've exploited Trump being president in 2016-2020 in a bid for Ukrainian territory and/or submission.
