@lagrangewei I'd argue that Europe has been a military colony of the US since 1946. There are more American troops (under direct US command, not NATO) in Germany than most of the smaller NATO nations can muster as their entire current defence.

That's a highly controversial, if not outright debunked, reason for the use of nuclear weapons. The two nukes were mere blips compared to the systematic fire-bombing campaigns of Japanese cities. The nukes were effectively a show of force from the US towards the USSR. It's broadly agreed by modern historians that the true reason for surrender was the USSR entering the war against Japan and the fear of what the USSR would do to Japanese culture and their monarchy, which is why they chose to surrender to the US instead.

Not likely. Popular sentiment in crimea is very much pro-Russian. Ukraine will essentially create a "Donbass" situation for themselves with regular armed forces fighting against an organized insurgency. I doubt the Ukrainian people and economy can handle that after a long drawn out conventional conflict with Russia proper. But at this point, I think we've all learned not to assume anything based on rational actions.
