Pole-Out? Hungo? Slovend?

@matthewrochowski6593 Hahaha. Really I think there should be some grown-ups that can find a solution that "we can all be unhappy about". Instead we get Polish populism and EU arrogance...

@matthewrochowski6593 And that's certainly your right. There are however certain "red lines" which Poland agreed to when joining. Independent courts and a free press. Not being targeted if you're a certain race/gender/sexuality/creed. PiS is imho taking Poland into a more authoritarian direction, and the only logical conclusion of that is the restriction of freedoms for certain groups. I also find it somewhat ironic that a country with the largest migrant population in Europe, is so adamantly wants "freedom to restrict freedoms". At least I'd like to thank you for being respectful and polite. That's not a given these days.

@matthewrochowski6593 I won't blame you. For now. But if you choose to actively support authoritarian nationalists, you'll all suffer for it. PiS and Orban doesn't care about anyone but staying in power...

@matthewrochowski6593 Yes, politicians care about power. But lumping everyone together is a fallacy... Just to use the US as an example, you have one party that have dealt in systematic misinformation and bad faith for the ultimate goal of pursuit of power at any cost. I absolutely agree. But you'd tell me that Ardern, Trudeau or Merkel are on the same level as Trump and his ilk? How about the same as Orban, Netanyahu or Bolsanaro? Currently, the EU is used as a political tool to maintain power and construct a false narrative of "us vs them". Meanwhile, they're consolidating authoritarian power by eroding the foundations of institutions that are there as checks ie Courts, Media and yes, the EU.

@matthewrochowski6593 Certainly not if they're gay, want an abortion, want to marry a foreigner or freely criticise restrictions on all of the above. But I digress. I think there's merit to not having the EU impose values on member states, but what Poland is essentially stating is that they want to be free to restrict the freedoms of others. Which is a bit... weird.

That's a pipedream. The integration of finance, commerce, labour and borders will not allow a "return" to EEC, let alone make it a feasible alternative. It's messy and sometimes ugly, but if smaller nations are to have a chance against greater national and corporate interests, this is the only way to safeguard it. Not necessarily a federation of sorts, but definitely a union of legal and economic cooperation... Name a single other entity that has provided more prosperity, peace and stability in Europe than the EU?

@VaucluseVanguard You seem to have forgotten that Greece, Portugal and Spain were all authoritarian regimes until the 80's. Turkey is a NATO member. How's that going? They shifted towards nationalism after they were rejected repeatedly by the EU (and somehow Bulgaria and Romania were deemed "ready" at the same time...) And were do you think Poland, Hungry and Czhechia would have been today without the EU? The Baltics?

No one will ever take a "civilised" Western nation seriously again if they mention international law or human rights. And it's good, because they haven't cared for them for a very long time, but finally the charade is definitively over.
