Although our general abhorrence of physical violence is a good thing in a society, to audaciously put aside vicious psychological attacks as a non-issue is ignorant of the causes of human pain. I agree that this particular incident probably didn't deserve a strong physical reaction as you describe, but putting it plainly: Bullies only understand the language of violence - mind you, this violence can be physical, verbal or even served in a humorous fashion. Bullies only understand "the bigger bully".
