@ T.Rey Except systematic genocide, whereas the Saxons and Arabs sought to integrate their customs in the societies they conquered - hence "anglo-saxons", Mughals, Khawarezm, Egypt and the Maghreb. Slavery was there, yes, but not based on "race". Heck, even the concept of race was not invented until white Europeans started their global hegemony in the 1700's

@danieldossantos5868 We can agree that slavery is slavery. Arabic slave bas as abhorrent, I agree. But not based on race. However you put it, the systematic approach of chattel slavery during colonialism and/or during the roman empire cannot be compared to any other slaving empires in sheer scope and extent.

@augustus8913 As you probably know, the quote was from during the Eastern Roman Empire. Hence "Constantinople", named for Constantine and not "Byzantion". The Greeks in that age saw themselves as the continuation of Rome. They were romanized and christianized. Although Greek was the language of the empire, and Greek culture had a strong influence on Rome, absolutely no Greek didn't see themselves as Romans first and foremost, during that period. But God bless you for joining in, whilst barely understanding the subject at hand.

@Dee K Of course it's okay. And the man was a hero, no doubt of that. I just don't see the pride in cheering for a guy that left his own country to go fight for another. Especially given the hardships that Ireland endured the last 400 years under British rule. Anyway, cheers to the Irish. My favourite people in Europe!

@davegreene8588 Did he have a dual citizenship? No? Then the correct term is really just American. The fact that he had Irish heritage/ancestry ie non-American ancestry... Well... That's literally every American except the Native nations. Secondly, eg many Italian Americans use that title. Except they don't speak Italian, have never been in Italy, don't know anything about the history or culture and barely can cook the food... Nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage. Just don't use it to treat people differently or elevate yourself because you happen to have ancestors that came from the same region.

@arthurtorin8776 Thank you for a well thought out reply. My point is not that of "Slavery bad. White people slavery worst." It can be summed up in 2 different points 1) Modern concepts of Eugenics, Racial Supremacy and Social Darwinism, Apartheid, Segregation used as recently as in our parents' lives. Yes. We can hold them to a different standard because it wasn't ancient history. Have you ever apologized for Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot because "it was a different time with different standards". No? My point exactly. "Dark acts" are abhorrent and recognized as such by contemporaries. That includes slavery in the 1800's. 2) The very real day to day impact of said policies from Baltimore, Atlanta, Detroit to Dar Es Salaam, Capetown, Dhaka or Pnom Penh. At least the recognition of damages done in human lives would be appropriate. Damages and restitution aside, would it hurt the prestige of modern "humane" democracies to acknowledge and apologize for these actions? No. Not slavery per se, but that is a good place to start.Then maybe apologize for Vietnam? Iraq? The French in Algeria? Brits in Rhodesia? The "Whites" are the worst by sheer scale because of their hegemonic dominance for 300-400 years and the emergence of libertarian ideals contrary to that, and yet continuing with the views on racial inequality. Also, scale matters, buddy. Just as the Holocaust and the Holodomor are held up as the worst events in history - not the concentration camps in South Africa by the British in the 1890's or the Irish Famine. Scale matters. Ps: The Neanderthals were a different species, not race. They went extinct not from conflict, but because we bred with them and sapiens had much higher birth rates.

@Dee K Of course people were treated differently if they had a different skin colour. I'm not arguing that. I'm arguing how the Irish, who look like every other European, were treated like shit alone based on their ethnicity. Hence: Modern concept of race. Also, maybe don't say "you lie, it's sickening" about something that is more an academic mental exercise than anything else. Did anyone get hurt by my assertion? Did it change anything in the world? It's views based on historic precedence. You're free to disagree. Doesn't make you a "liar". Don't be a fucking infant.

Abducted children sold to western agencies for adoption? Hell... I'll go even lower and say this: Having two jobs, no healthcare and barely affording food and rent, while your employer in Amazon and Walmart have record profits every year? Yeah, mate. Modern slavery is completely abolished in the West... My original comment was regarding how Greeks lift up Rome and are derogatory towards Persia, when they were clearly more civilised. Also, I'm not defending backwards Muslim countries, but relatively, Muslim Today still have more rights than they ever had under Roman and especially greek law. It's a good thing that the Greeks became less Greek, but their antipathy towards other cultures (and it really is all of them - Slavs, Albanians, Turks) is unproductive and speaks of how immensely arrogant the tiny Lilliputian nation of modern Greece sees itself today. And I love the Greek people. I volunteered in 2016 to help Greece during the refugee crisis. They're a lovely people, but they really need to lose their self-image of being a great culture. They're lovely, fascinating and unique, but not important or powerful.
