Persia is an exonym. The Iranians trying to distance themselves from the regime in Iran by insisting they're "Persians" are using the Greek name for their country. It would be like the English insisting on being called "Anglais" because they hate their own regime in their country.

@Redbaron9495 Sure, I don't doubt that. I just find it weird to use the term "Persian" when there's a very good alternative that even makes perfect sense: Iranian.

@DIREWOLFx75 Yeah, again, that's the Greek exonym. No such thing as Persia in Farsi. The land has been called Fars, Iran or different version of dynastic names. Persia is the European name for it. Again, would the English say "Anglais" about themselves just because most of Europe (nobility and Kings) spoke French in the 16-1700s?

@HarryC-Smith Nope. It was Fars, not Pars. Hence the Greek exonym and the language called "Farsi". In arabic it's called "Fares". That name wasn't imported through secondhand accounts of foreign lands from Greeks and Romans.
