500 years of systemic oppression and ethnic cleansing have a way to make Ireland think twice about rushing into war on the side of the British. The real question is: Were there any good reasons to NOT be neutral.

@Lodatz You forget that at that point, Ireland had only been truly independent for 18 years. To throw yourself headlong into a war, under probable British command, and risking bombings and attacks on your merchant marine for what? What could the Irish achieve by joining the war versus the risks? I'm not arguing from a moral standpoint. That is obvious and would be the same for the Swedish, Swiss, Turks and Portuguese. Merely an economic and "real" political standpoint. To that I reiterate: No good reasons to NOT stay neutral.
