The Heartland/World Island theory from Mackinder really only accounts for strategy from a geo-political strategic standpoint, and doesn't account for basic economics, logistics or population density. Sure it's an outdated theory, but even 100 years ago, the most powerful truly global nations were maritime and the landpowers (Russia, India, China) were great powers in their respective regions only.
