In your country however the Germans did not pursue a scorched earth policy. You should read about the war crimes committed by the Wehrmacht and the SS in the former USSR. TIK History has some videos about that. While I detest the Soviets, I have no empathy for the Third Reich and their supporters whether they were NSDAP members or not. Maybe the Germans should never have invaded the USSR? They were the aggressor then, the way Russia is the aggressor now.

While I can empathise, you have to remember that the German army committed horrible crimes against the Slav and Jewish people in those areas. TIK History has videos about that. It was also Germany which started to mass exterminate Russian POWs. Russian POWs were treated like animals and were starved to death. The Germans chose Adolf Hitler at the end of the day. The Soviet people never voted for Stalin, the Bolsheviks came to power in a revolution, then won a civil war and never held elections. Culpability has to be rationally shared where it's due.

True. The difference being that the Poles never invaded Russia and never followed a scorched earth policy the way the Germans did in 1940s. The Poles were fighting for their independence in their own former ancestral homelands. The Germans never had a claim on any Soviet lands.

@danielwalker5682 Nothing is justified here. But you have to understand the context. The Germans exterminated all Soviet POWs. The survival rate for a Soviet POW was like 1-2%. The Russians actually treated the Germans better than the Germans treated the Russian POWs and women and children. I'm Polish and I don't like either WW2 Russians or WW2 Germans and I don't like Russian imperialism now, but this discussion is about WW2 and back then the Nazi Germans and their allies were actually worse. I'm anti communist by the way.

@danielwalker5682 The German war of aggression of 1939 to 1945 was one of the worst examples of inhumane barbarism ever. I think it would make Genghis Khan blush. It would likely make the Khmer Rouge blush too. Russia is bad. We know. But let's not defend Nazi Germans. Silicon Curtain is tarnishing the Ukrainian plight with Nazi German revisionism here.

@Calligraphybooster I'm not sure what the etymology of scorched earth means to the relevance of what the Germans did to the Russians in WW2. TIK History has some videos about the eastern front and what the German army did i.e. take food from the peasants and cause them to starve to death. Secondly we all know that the Russian POWs were treated terribly. Finally him being Norwegian does not mean he knows how much worse the fate of most Slavic people was compared to fellow Aryans as the Norwegians were at the time. I actually know that most Western Europeans know very little about WW2 and likely because inherent racist and supremacist biases consider us Slavs as lesser human beings. I mean look at you. You bring up Napoleon. We're discussing WW2 here in the context of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and you speak of Napoleon. For you this is a navel gazing exercise in bringing up anecdotes. Hence I don't know if he knows.

@Calligraphybooster Let's be good and let's not make a joke out of mass human suffering.

@JingleJangleJam I don't think the rest lowered their standards to the level of the Nazi Germans. For one the Nazi Germans were systematically eliminating people, they started with Jews but the first people they targeted in Poland were not Jews but Polish intelligentsia - some were Jewish Poles too, but targetted not for their Jewishness but to decapitate the Polish nation. Google the Intelligentzaktion. Now tell me where did the Western allies implement this in Japan or Germany after defeating them. They didn't. This is but one of many examples of how the Allies never reached the evil of the NSDAP Germany. The Soviets were evil too, we know, but their intentions were not to mass exterminate entire populations but to subjugate entire peoples. And the Soviets did have an Intelligentzaktion in Poland in 1939 and in 1944-1989.

@JingleJangleJam Of course you are anti-Slav. Take the recent movie about a bunch of guys fighting Germans in Africa. Not a single Pole among them. You get Dutch or Belgians but not a single Pole. Take Inglorius Basterds, any Poles there? But Poles were the real deal back then. Google Pilecki. As for anti-Slav, that still contiues. Ask any "Western European" what they think of Slavic people and usually you guys hate us. And for that reason Western Europe cannot become diverse fast enough. I

@hh-kv6fh It was originally a Polish city, the architecture there is Polish.
1
@hh-kv6fh Lwow definitely has Polish architecture and was a Polish city. You're getting your history from the Austrian Painter.
1
@hh-kv6fh You're a troll. Lwow was originally a Polish-Lithuanian city. Austrians conquered it the way a pedo-f-i-le conquers a child. That doesn't mean it was theirs. Anyway, the Polish highlanders are not based on the Austrians. All Indo-Europan cultures are similar. You need to go back to school.

@ekesandras1481 So you're saying Poles and later Ukrainians did not add more buildings or remodel? And all buildings in this heavy Polish city (in the 19th century) were built by Austrians to their style. That's not true. Sorry. As for the Austrian Painter many here are deeply inspired by the guy. Keep on going on about Austria and Lemberg to show off your admiration for this guy. Austrians have a long history of racism toward Poles and other Slavic people. The Austro-Hungarian empire was a cesspool of filth and racist oppression.
