Maybe. But he downplays the Polish successes. There were 100s of planes and tanks/armoured cars and so on, the Germans lost. We're portrayed as gallant but useless so it still plays into the whole Goebbels trope of backward, useless Poles which we are seen as to this day. If you really ask these Brits what they think, we're still those people who deserve pity and help. The Polish word would be an 'ofiara'. But hey at least we're mentioned in some way.

Virtually every civilian was a 'hero' in Poland in those years. You had to be to survive. As a Pole you could be shot at any time for any reason by the German occupier.

Wojtek the Bear is not well known in Poland. Why would a bear be known well in Poland where everyone had relatives who who passed on in WW2. Wojtek the Bear is a story which is run with by the Brits and others. Given the propensity of current people to view animals so favourably, that story resonates I suppose. Honestly I only heard about this Bear from English sources and only recently. My whole extended family never spoke about it. It was just not that important a story. That actually tells you how sheltered the Western people have been and still are. For you guys a war in Iraq or wherever is very abstract, for us, well we still see some ruined buildings and bullet holes in walls. I still remember seeing ruined buildings in the early 2000s, which were left over from WW2.

When the Germans arrived. A distant uncle of mine was one of the first soldiers killed at Westerplatte. No Nazis but Germans.

@RawPatrol My Dear RawPatrol, From my experience and it's now a long one and experience of others whom I've interacted with, on the balance the Poles were and still are seen as useless. We're seen in an instrumental way at best and as a nuisance at worse, and often completely disregarded. There for example is a good chance that Poland will not be invited to provide an opinion as to any future security network in the region, in the best case scenario if the US stands against Russia, Germany will decide as per their MittelEuropa concept, with the US, France and UK. In the worst case scenario, Poland will be sold off to Russia to allow the German economy to survive and make good business with America. Either way we are still seen as useless and were seen then as useless. Have a good day.

@joshportie ?? No, what's invented is the "Church of England". The Papacy is a continuation of Peter the Disciple. His remains were actually found underneath the Vatican City.

I think it's important to repeat Wielun. There are more and more neo-N-azis about who harp on the 'suffering' and 'ge=no-ci-de" of the "German people" these days. On has to remind them that the first bombs were those dropped by Germany on civilians.

Dominic Sandbrook reminds me of the French correspondent/ guest editor from ? La Monde or Le Figaro who appeared on a BBC World discussion show every Sunday. They could be twins.

Second class people according to the West but still people which differed from the German view in the 30s. Now it's were all still seen as thieves by the Germans. And in the 1950-70s the Germans thought we'd not be able to handle the 'reclaimed lands'.
