@AverageAlien Human being? I know we are classified as animals, and there are also plants and there are also viruses and finally things which are in some ways animal/plant like but in limited aspects, prions. I think one could redefine animals to exclude human beings too. Otherwise if we claim we share so much, we could also say, are we rocks?

@KT-pv3kl Easy. Sentient beings like you and me who think rationally, who are able to create abstract and physical works often far removed from their ancestral habitat, record objective information, overcome perceptual shortcuts via the use of rational analysis and observation, have immense abilities to adapt to various situations and environments using tools, technology, naturally occurring and artificial items, and so on. Now go on and apply that to an octopus or a dolphin. Why do you say "damn sure". Are you like a cowboy? Do you chew tobacco? or are you a pirate?

@KT-pv3kl A rational person like you and me who is able to reason in an abstract way, is able to manipulate abstract and physical objects, is able to record information and analyze it using instruments, is able to overcome instinct, is capable of making moral choices (i.e is a moral agent), is able to adapt to environments which are far removed from the natural habitat, is able to enjoy and has the capacity to perform art, may have a spiritual element as in considering the divine, etc... Now apply this to a dolphin.

@agiosovindex333 I think you are stretching the degree of their intelligence. Look in some ways even microbes are intelligent. The kind of rational intelligence we can be sure of, only humans have. Maybe some animals have some aspects of it, or we think they do, we can't really ask them, but at this stage they are nowhere near our level.

@agiosovindex333 How do you know microbes are not aware. Some believe that even rocks are aware. Have you spoken to a dolphin? Maybe what you see is not self awareness but appearance of such or it's so incomplete it's not far from our own experience. Lots of assumptions. But we simply don't know. We know we have self awareness, because you have it, and I feel it first hand.
