  1. As viewership fragmented, broadcast networks had to cut costs. Instead of paying multiple actors on a sitcom hundreds of thousands of dollars for each episode, networks switched to reality TV where they paid one host more money and then brought on low-paid people who are not even actors to do outrageous stunts. Try to keep viewers, but pay much less to produce the shows.
