A big factor in why supply and demand did not adjust prices lower is that there is not enough competition in the market. Econ 101 used to include competition, success and failure, and low barriers to entry. Now it seems to be the bigger the better, too big to fail, and impossibly high barriers to entry. With all the mergers and acquisitions which have been allowed in the past few decades, these large corporations have so much power that they can set prices high because we as consumers have no other companies to buy from.
